Introduction
The Armidale Aboriginal community is part of the rich cultural tapestry of Indigenous Australians. Located in the New England region of New South Wales, Armidale is home to diverse Aboriginal groups, including the Anaiwan Nation, among others. The community is proud of its cultural heritage, traditions, and ongoing connection to the land

Cultural Heritage
The Aboriginal community in Armidale has a deep spiritual and historical connection to the land. Traditional practices, storytelling, art, and ceremonies are vital parts of maintaining cultural identity. The Anaiwan people, in particular, have a longstanding history of living sustainably with the environment, utilizing resources respectfully, and passing down knowledge through generations

Core Values
Respect
Respect for Elders, ancestors, land, and cultural practices is fundamental. Elders are considered the custodians of knowledge and are highly revered within the community.
Connection to Land
The land is central to Indigenous identity and spirituality. The community values maintaining a strong connection to ancestral lands, which is reflected in land management, storytelling, and cultural practices.
Family and Community
Family (known as "skin groups") and community cohesion are highly valued. Supporting each other and maintaining kinship ties strengthen cultural continuity and social stability.
Cultural Preservation
Preserving language, traditions, and stories is essential for cultural survival. The community actively engages in cultural education and celebrates significant cultural events.
Justice and Self-determination
A commitment to justice, equality, and self-determination guides the community's efforts to improve social and economic outcomes and advocate for recognition and rights.
Contemporary Life
Today, the Armidale Aboriginal community actively participates in local governance, education, and cultural initiatives. They work alongside government and non-government organizations to promote awareness, education, and reconciliation.
How history relates to our values
Our cultural history of the Aboriginal community greatly informs and enriches the way we run our disability service. Rooted in the community’s values of respect, connection to land, family, and cultural preservation, we prioritise providing a culturally safe and inclusive environment that honors indigenous traditions and perspectives. Understanding the importance of self-determination and holistic well-being, we ensure that the services we offer are not only accessible but also respectful of cultural practices and beliefs. By incorporating cultural awareness, storytelling, and community engagement into my approach, we aim to promote dignity, empowerment, and stronger connections for individuals with disabilities. My deep connection to cultural heritage guides us to create a supportive space where clients feel valued, understood, and connected to their cultural identity while accessing essential disability support.
